About
John Montgomery is an experienced freelance art director + graphic designer based in Toronto, interested in story-telling in all forms, providing creative direction services to corporate and editorial clients. He approaches all work with equal parts creativity and strategy, leveraging a skill for organization to create comprehensive design solutions.
He has previously worked with ALLCAPS Content, Intagles, Harbour Publishing, Reader's Digest Canada and Sélection, Canadian Business, MoneySense, Toronto Life, Financial Post Magazine and Taddle Creek magazines, as well as worked with the University of Alberta’s New Trail magazine, Nelson Education, the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, and the Ontario Association of Architects. John has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards—including winning silver for cover of the year in 2016—and has been nominated for a number of Alberta Magazines Awards—winning two in 2023 for Feature Design (Gold) and Art Direction for a Single Issue (Silver).
He has spoken numerous times on magazine cover design for the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, Magazines Canada and the International Regional Media Association. He has also done consultations with publications on what they can do to help improve their design for AMPA’s Pros On The Road series. John has been a judge for the National Magazine Awards and the Alberta Magazine Awards multiple times, and was an editorial category judge for the Society of Illustrators’ 62nd annual. He is a PAC member for Centennial College’s graphic design program and a previous PAC member for Sheridan College’s Bachelor of Illustration program. He’s currently taking on new freelance clients, as well as teaching Illustration Entrepreneurial Studies and Emerging Markets part-time for Sheridan College’s Bachelor of Illustration program.
